During the start of the 2008 recession, many different companies went out of business, jobs were lost and so was the dream of an 80 storey condo tower called 1 Bloor East by Kazakh firm Bazis. Great publicity had buyers lined up outside for weeks, just to see starting prices be hiked up 35%. Buyers were angry, the units sold, then Lehman Brothers the major financial backer went bankrupt.
With the foundation excavated, the massive whole on the corner of Yonge and Bloor was filled with rock. Uncertainty filled the project and many were left wondering what would happen to Toronto’s famous corner. The landmark to mark where East, West, North, and South meet was put on hold, until Toronto’s Great Gulf Group of Companies purchased the site. Renaming the tower One Bloor East and a complete redesign the project took off again.
Many significant changes were made. The building was scaled down from 80 floors to 65 floors. The size reduction also caused a reduction in the amount of suites for sale from 801-690. A hotel will no longer be included, as another high end Four Seasons is going up a block away. A 6 storey podium will be overlooked by a 65 storey tower. Prices will be from $390,000 to 1.5 million. With suites ranging from 530 square feet to 1,724.
Award winning architectural design firm Hariri Pontarini Architechts was hired to design the spiral like building. With projects like X, X2, and Charlie Condos, the developers and architects have proven experience. Add in Cecconi Simone Inc. interior design firm and you have a high class building. With amazing views, enlarged corner balconies and superior finishes, this promises to be a jewel of a building. Commercial and retail space will be available for lease, with Apple Canada looking to be a prospective tenant.
Just walking minutes from Toronto’s trendy, posh neighborhood Yorkville this project is sure to attract attention. With great shopping, amazing food, stellar universities and a diverse thriving city, why live anywhere else. Yonge street is redeveloping, and One Bloor East will be an icon in the skyline.
